Ceramic artist James Aarons made this black pill shape and then just stuck it in my studio. Frankly, I was unused to something that looked like this and had no idea what to do with it. It sat around for awhile and intrigued. Then James invaded my studio to show a lamp to someone for me while I was away and, while staging the space, he put together the sculptural collage. Once again, it just sat there and kind of started taunting me, like "what are you going to do now, dummy?" Finally, I thought, it should have some swirls and some bumps to reflect the base. I screen printed the swirls and found an old wallpaper pattern of circular leaves that I modified greatly to get the right effect, add a little silver, add back in some warm and bam! "King Volcano.”

All "Empire" lamps include new sockets, plugs and wiring. Every lamp is a unique combination of hand-made ceramics and found objects produced in our Northern CA studios. The shades use heavy acid-free rag papers and are preserved with UV and moisture-lock archival protection.
